Trump Nominates Michael Selig as New CFTC Chair
President Donald Trump has selected Michael Selig to lead the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, replacing previous nominee Brian Quintez following pressure from Gemini founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss. Selig, currently chief counsel for the SEC's crypto Task Force, brings extensive experience in digital assets regulation from his prior role at Willkie Farr & Gallagar LLP.
The appointment signals potential regulatory alignment between the CFTC and SEC, particularly regarding the implementation of the CLARITY and GENIUS Acts. Selig's cross-agency expertise positions him to shape frameworks for cryptocurrency oversight, spot trading, and institutional investor protections.
Industry observers anticipate the nomination could accelerate institutional adoption of digital assets. Variant Fund's Jake Chervinsky had previously commented on Selig's regulatory philosophy when he emerged as a leading candidate for the position.
